GBATA is an SRAM patcher (among other things). Later batches of GBA games used something that was electrically/protocol compatible with SRAM but needed no battery (usually seen as FRAM if you go looking, though internally and for the purposes of GBA lists like then still SRAM).

Thanks again birth of you for your input and answers. However, there is still the problem with the traces from the pad I assume is Ground going to both VCC and Gnd - that's unusual. Strange.Įdit: on the photo it looks like there are damaged traces at the bottom - it's dirt, didn't notice when taking the photo - all traces are you know for what reason? I was curious too b/c it has this obvious "RAM" written next to it but the label next to the pad below it wasn't very helpful here. The pad above the pad I marked with the circle leads nowhere - I tested it against all pins of the SRAM. It's all new to me so just for my understanding: if one solders a battery (if it's possible at all) to this type of carts all roms that save to sram should work / save without problems - is this assumption correct? And the EEPROM / flash saving roms work correctly when patched with e.g. Hi and thanks for your took a photo of the bottom layer but totally forgot to add it here, it's attached now. Looking at a picture on the latter I would have to wonder if the two holes around where you highlighted are also for the purpose of soldering battery legs - it looks like a classic coin cell arrangement there.

Without a shot of the back side I don't think we can trace it visually as if VCC is indeed what you say (somewhat odd to be in the middle of the chip rather than a corner but hey it might be for balancing) then it looks like it goes up to the top of the image and then in a via to another layer/the other side. This is a lot of effort to go to for what will probably be a single ROM flash cart.

*not usually too bad as it is probably just a different offset but same code or similar enough that you can twist an open source patcher to do it.

That said there do seem to be a few variations of repro type cart out there and not so many are documented in any real capacity From what I have seen they alter the ROM to store the save in an unusual way (if you dump the ROM and it is rather different to the ones known to the Scene then yeah), though I guess you are wishing to dodge that by adding a battery and having it use conventional SRAM saving (which might also not be the same as general saving if it uses a different type*). Blob chip usually means some repro type deal.
